Netball Semester 1 Recap

by Hope Bourton

Netball have had a very busy first semester with a mixture of charity, performance and social events. We have thrived to raise as much money for RAG as possible, get involved in as many SU incentives as possible and be as successful as we can in our teams in BUCS.

We have thrived in BUCS so far this season with thirds sitting unbeaten at the the top of their league. Firsts, seconds and fours sit comfortably in the top half of their league and fifths are building as a team improving every game. We have had 6 girls being selected into u19’s/u21’s Severn stars squads and first team player/coach Lucy Herdman being selected into the 12 of the Severn stars super league squad. Renee Powell has also been selected as training partner for the Severn stars super league squad and the English universities squad. Finally, umpire scholar Evie SD was selected to umpire the Dubai sevens tournament, a prestigious honour.

In regards to charity events, we ran a bring a boy to netball night that was highly successful. We raised money for charity and also introduced many males to the sport of netball. We also ran a charity bingo event in the Hangar for RAG. This was extremely successful and managed to raise lots of money for charity. Furthermore, we worked with women’s football and women’s hockey to organise an inter sports tournament for RAG. The netball girls had a lot of fun learning new sports whilst building connections with other sports.

We have continued our strong relationships with tramps by putting on a variety of socials such as olympics, I’m a celebrity and uniboob pink social. We also held a sober social at the bowling alley in support of ‘The girls night in campaign’, which lead to really positive changes to protect our netballers on a night out. We also got involved in SU incentives such as the #NeverOk, black history month and active bystander workshops. These are all campaigns that help and support people in our society which is something we enjoy doing.

We have had such a fun semester and can’t wait for what next semester brings.
