Biology Society Update

by Gemma Allcott

We had so much fun in semester 1 and are really proud of what we achieved. We were all new to being committee members of a society, so it was quite exciting to take the society in the direction we wanted.

We were keen to get involved with STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) events, and decided pride in STEM day would be a great opportunity to do just this. We collaborated with the LGBTQ+ network and held an event in Union Square where we demonstrated fun, colourful science experiments alongside raising awareness about the difficulties LGBTQ+ individuals can experience in STEM fields. We also held a raffle and raised over £100 for Stonewall charity.

In December, we held a clothes drive where we collected clothing donations to take to Maggs day centre, a local charity who help homeless and vulnerable people within Worcestershire. We were so pleased with how many people were kind enough to donate, and managed to take 15 large bags of clothes to them.

It’s been a really lovely experience to get involved with TeamWorc, and our committee members enjoyed taking party in Uniboob’s bikeathon and Harvey & Hope’s Rowathon for Movember. They both did an amazing job in organising these events! Gemma and Abie also took part in the canal clean with WASUP, and hope to join in more in 2022.

We also try to meet up regularly for socials, which normally are in town 😊.

In November, Dr Coles from the Worcester Biomedical Research Group gave a talk about his research into acute myeloid leukaemia which was really popular, we even had old students from the University getting in touch and joining us on teams to watch.

In semester 2 we hope to hold more social events, fundraisers and academic talks.
